Are you overdoing it?

September 8, 2017

This is something I've talked a lot about, and something hopefully we all now know we should be doing. BUT....
How do you know when enough is enough?

Here's an important thing to remember:
Our skin is our body's first line of defence against the outside world; it protects us from pollution, toxins, UVA/UVB rays, and other harsh elements we face daily.
Exfoliating the skin is an important part of taking care of it and keeping it healthy, but if we exfoliate too often we strip away too much of the protective barrier and it can't function properly.
The result is usually dry, red, irritated, sometimes bumpy, sensitive skin.
So what is the solution?
Pick a method of exfoliation you want to do. Is it physical, like a facial scrub, Clarisonic type brush, or microdermabrasion treatments? Physical exfoliating generally does not need to happen daily, so put down your apricot scrub and use your regular cleanser at night too. ; )
A scrub twice a week is plenty!

Or do you prefer chemical exfoliation? This is chemical peels, glycolic or other alpha hydroxy acids (AHA's). Retinol is another great example of an exfoliator.
Pick your fave, and stick with it. Personally I love Retinol as my exfoliator. It has so many other benefits (anti-aging and anti-acne to name a couple) making it an awesome multi-tasker.
Now that you have your favorite, you don't need to throw other methods in the mix. There is absolutely such thing as too much of a good thing. An occasional (like once a month) added treatment like a peel or microdermabrasion, or dermaplaning treatment, is great to mix things up.
But you don't need to go crazy!
Our bodies are pretty smart and amazing things. They know how to heal and take care of themselves, sometimes we need to step back and let that happen. :)
